HUNTINGTON – The Huntington Fall Festival, on Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., continues to grow, says festival organizer Janine LaPointe.
Now in its ninth year, the crafts, music, food and fun fest on the Town Common and inside Stanton Hall continues to attract new exhibitors as well as returning vendors to celebrate the harvest and show off their wares.
Janine LaPointe and her husband Nick LaPointe started the festival themselves after returning from one in Granville a decade ago, when they decided that Huntington should have one. Both are business owners in town – Janine owns Simply You hair salon (doing business as Main Street Styles & Spa), Paul owns Down to Earth Excavating, and they also run Windy Pines Maple Products on Goss Hill Road.
“My husband and I first started it to give back to the town,” Janine LaPointe said.
For the first couple of years, they did everything themselves. Most of the tents for the vendors are theirs, and they grow the pumpkins for the pumpkin painting, one of the activities for children. They then became a non-profit, the Huntington Fall Festival Committee, and added members Laura and Jason Nichols and Shelly Keeney.
“We have tons of family and friends that help make it possible,” Janine said.
Proceeds from the vendor booths, which cost $25, and from donations are used to award two scholarships to Smith Vocational School agricultural graduates from Huntington who plan to continue their education.
“That was our intention when we started it,” Janine said.
This year’s live entertainment includes “Out of Bounds,” who will perform from the Gazebo on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., and “Harvest Moon” on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
A petting zoo and food prepared by Rapid’s Bar & Grill are also featured.
The festival, which is free to the public, will be held rain or shine, with many activities inside Stanton Hall, also located on the Huntington Town Common, at the intersection of Route 20 and Route 112.
