Huntington plans holiday festivities

Date: 12/1/2020

HUNTINGTON – The Huntington Recreation Committee is encouraging residents to spruce up their homes for the holidays, by sponsoring a Holiday Tour of Lights and Door Decorating.

Vicki Mayhew, committee spokesperson, is hoping that residents will get into the spirit, and submit their addresses to the Huntington Recreation Committee to be posted on a map on their Facebook page at Huntington Recreation Committee.

“Tis the Season and we all need a little cheer. Since activities are limited, how about a drive around town to see some decorated doors and holiday lights? Stay safe with your family and enjoy the sights of the town in which you live,” said Mayhew.

To participate, residents may simply decorate their doors for the season, adorn their houses with lights, or set up a whole display of inflatable lawn ornaments. Then, they can send in their addresses by Dec. 15 to be added to the map as either a door display or light display – or both – so people know whether to drive by day or by night.  The map will be posted on the Huntington Recreation Committee FB page on Dec 17.

All participants will be entered into a raffle for a gift certificate to local businesses. The drive around will be during the weekend of  Dec. 18 to Dec. 20.

“Anything you think may bring a smile to someone during their drive. Let’s light up the town,” said Mayhew.

Also, the Huntington Community Events Committee is changing its annual Gingerbread House Decorating event by offering kits to-go for residents to decorate at home.

Availability is limited to a first-come, first-served basis, and kits must be ordered, one per family, by Dec. 6.  To reserve a kit, contact Vicki Mayhew at vkmayhew@gmail.com or call 667-0085 and leave your name, phone number and kit size preference (one large house to decorate as a family or a four-pack of individual smaller houses to decorate).

Pick up of the kits will be on Dec. 12 from 2 to 2:30 p.m. in the Huntington Public Library parking lot.  Please follow social distancing protocols when you pick up your kit.
