HUNTINGTON – Town Clerk Linda Hamlin has announced that the 2021 Huntington Municipal Election will take place on May 15.
Residents will be voting for positions on the Board of Selectmen, town clerk, Board of Assessors, Board of Health, Regional School Committee, water/sewer commissioner, Whiting Street Fund trustee, Huntington Librarytrustee, tree warden, moderator, Alphonso P. Pettis Fund trustee, and constable .
To appear on the ballot, candidates needed to take out nomination papers by March 17 at 5 p.m., and get a minimum of 20 signatures of registered voters. Nomination papers may already be found in stores around town for residents to sign. Papers must be returned by March 24 at 5 p.m. for signatures to be certified.
Write-ins are also counted on Election Day, but Hamlin urged people to write in only legitimate registered voters, and not waste the time of the counters with phony or nonsensical names which won’t be counted. “Unfortunately, we usually do get a few of those,” she said.
Hamlin said there will be Early Voting and Vote by Mail options for the Municipal Election, although details are still being discussed in the state legislature, and application and deadline dates will be announced once confirmed.
The Special Town Meeting and Annual Town Meeting will be Monday, June 7.
“I expect that the town meetings will be live, although I don't know where they will be held. That will depend on numerous factors which are currently not known. No actual decisions have been made except the date,” Hamlin said.
Hamlin said there is also no word yet of Town Hall reopening. “It will be decided by the Selectboard depending on the constantly evolving COVID-19 status,” she said.
