It's Cool to be in the library in the summer

Date: 7/6/2021

GRANVILLE – Granville Public Library Director Lise LeTellier is looking to welcome adults, teens, children and families to the Library at 2 Granby Road this summer. “Whether it is a good book or an air-conditioned space, we are here for you,” she said, adding that new books arrive every month.

LeTellier said last summer, using the Green Initiative Grant, new energy efficient split systems were installed and this summer they are really enjoying the air conditioning.  Their summer theme is “It’s Cool to be in the Library.”

After taking the job in July of 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, LeTellier said she is starting to see the library draw people again.  “I'm finally seeing new people compared to the regulars I saw during COVID.  Now, I’m beginning to see new faces, new families and new adults, slowly but surely,” she said.

The Tales and Tails 2021 Summer Reading Program kicked off on June 26, but children, tweens and teens may still register throughout the summer and win prizes.  LeTellier said the story hour is focused on younger children, but they have raffle prizes for tweens and teens who can keep track of their reading time to enter and are very welcome.

The library is also putting on a host of summer programs geared to different age groups. In July, painting classes with Granville artist Kim Velkey will be held upstairs in the program room in two sessions; on July 15, from 3 to 6 p.m. for ages 10 to 15, and on July 22, 3 to 6 p.m. for ages 16 to adult.  Pre-registration is required.

LeTellier said she wanted to host the classes after an 11-year-old patron brought in a painting she did in a class with Velkey that she said is “beautiful,” and is now hanging in the library.

Two sessions are also scheduled in July with Paleontologist Mark McMenamin for dinosaur lovers of all ages.  On July 29, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., “The Big Tails!” will be presented for children, and on July 29, from 7 to 8 p.m., “Local Geology, Dinosaurs and Ancient Life” will be the program for adults.

LeTellier said McMenamin of South Hadley is a professor of paleontology at Mount Holyoke College, and was involved in the selection this winter of the official Massachusetts state dinosaur, Podokesaurus holyokensis.

Other programs scheduled for July include:
• July 17 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Summer Reading with Brittany Franklin for the Animal Shelter.
• July 24 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. “Zoo on the Go,” Forest Park Zoo visits for all ages.
• July 31 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. “Create a Fantasy Creature” with Sharon Billings. Pre-Registration is required.

August offerings will include cardmaking for teens, herbal medicine, musicians and more.  For a list of all upcoming programs, visit the library or check out their website at www.GranvillePublicLibrary.org. (Telephone: 357-8531)

“I’m excited about some of the things we have and are getting going.  It just feels good to have programs and options again. During COVID, we did not do virtual programs because we knew our community was too small, so we offered other libraries’ virtual programs. Now I’ll be able to track those things and see what people are enjoying,” LeTellier said.
