Library to sponsor ‘Laugh & Learn’ comedy show on Oct. 2

Date: 9/22/2021

GRANVILLE – Imagine a comedy club in a school or a library, and you’ve got “Laugh & Learn,” an educational show that explains while it entertains.

Teacher, comedian, writer and musician Dave Maloof of Belchertown will discuss how and why we laugh, the health benefits of laughter, and how comedy is written and performed. The show will take place on the lawn under the tent at Granville Public Library, 2 Granby Rd., on Oct. 2 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Social distancing of groups is required and masks are encouraged.

Maloof said “Laugh & Learn” is a combination of a comedy show and classroom. He weaves in between the two, interspersing comedic songs and jokes that connect to the overall purpose: the importance of laughter in people’s lives for their mental and physical health.

Maloof will perform his own comedy songs, including “My Wife Is In Love with the Dog” and his parody of “Hush Little Baby,” accompanying himself on the ukulele and piano. He also shares some of his jokes with the audience.

While all ages are welcome, the show is not necessarily geared to children. Maloof said he has performed shows for ages 8 to 80, adjusting the material, some of which draws on his experience doing stand-up comedy, depending on the audience. He said little kids might like the music more than talking about the difficulties of life, and he will do some jokes and some back and forth with them.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Granville Cultural Council, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Maloof said he started performing comedy in 2005 and started doing shows for cultural councils in 2014 and 2015.
