CHESTER – Terry Donovan was appointed by the Board of Selectmen at the end of June as the new Chester town clerk, replacing Rosemary Dalesandro, who served for two years.
Donovan is also the animal control officer for Chester, Blandford and Middlefield, and chairman of the Hamilton Library Trustees. Donovan said she first volunteered for the library board nine years ago, after Marianne Sullivan put out a call for trustees. Sullivan has recently come back on the board, she said.
Donovan has a bachelor’s degree in animal science and worked for many years selling veterinary supplies. She currently has her own boarding and grooming kennel in Chester, where she has lived for 22 years.
She said her organizational skills from running her own business and as branch operator and supervisor for 16 years for the Butler Animal Health Supply Co. have given her the skills she needs for the job of town clerk. She also served briefly as assistant town clerk in Huntington.
The town clerk is responsible for maintaining the custody of birth, death and marriage records, as well as issuing other certificates, permits and licenses. Donovan’s hours will be Tuesday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. She may be reached at 354-6603.
As animal control officer for Chester, Blandford and Middlefield, Donovan responds to calls about everything from lost dogs to rabid raccoons and baby birds. She said three years ago, she responded to a call about a litter of baby skunks. The animal control office may be reached at 354-0975.
In her role as library trustee, Donovan is also trying to find a space for Library Director Angelique Toroni to operate out of while the library is treated for mold, as well as looking at long-term plans for the library.
As Donovan said recently, referring to plans for the library, but which may be applied to all her various jobs in town, “There’s a lot of balls in the air at this point in time,” she said.
