Officials preparing for May municipal elections in hilltowns

CHESTER – Chester Town Clerk Rosemary Dalesandro announced this week that the town election will be conducted on May 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Town Hall auditorium.  Early voting is by mail only, and ballots may be downloaded from the Mass.Gov website by typing in Vote by Mail, or residents may call the Town Clerk’s office at 354-6603.

Two contested races are on the ballot in Chester. Jason Forgue and Frank Pero, Jr. are running for selectman, three year term, and Greg Harrison and Duane C. Peace for a three year term on the Board of Health.

Jeana Briggs is the sole candidate for a three-year term on the School Committee, and Deryck Savoy is the sole candidate for a three-year term as Electric Light commissioner.

There are no candidates on the ballot for assessor, (three-year term); for moderator (two-year terms), and for library trustee, where there are two openings for three year terms.

Dalesandro said that anyone who did not return the annual street list in January will be put on the inactive voting list. Notices that the office has not received the 2021 street census will be resent after April 16. Residents may also go to the town website and download a copy of the street census to fill  in and drop off at the town hall in the large block box.

On Election Day, inactive voters may still vote, but will first be asked to show identification and will be required to fill out an affirmation of current and continuous residence, Dalesandro said.

Huntington

In Huntington, Town Clerk Linda Hamlin released the ballot for the May 15 election, and asked that residents consider running for vacancies as write-in candidates.  There are no contested elections.  Hamlin is running again for a three-year term as town clerk.

Incumbent Edward Renauld is running again for a three-year seat on the Board of Selectmen. Another three-year seat on the Board of Selectmen has no official candidates, but resident Peter Campbell has announced plans for a write-in campaign.

Melissa Reid is seeking another three-year term on the Board of Health.  A one-year vacancy on the Board of Health has no candidates.

Sue Fopiano has announced a write-in campaign for a three-year seat on the Board of Assessors.

David Lubbers, who filled a one-year term on the Regional School Committee, is running for a three-year term. A one-year term on the School Committee has no candidates

H. Daniel Oliveira is running for a three-year term on Water & Sewer. A one-year term on Water & Sewer has no candidates.

Other incumbents on the ballot are Walter Wittshirk for tree warden (one year), George Peterson, III for moderator (one year), Charles Dazelle for constable (three years), Karen Wittshirk as a trustee for the Alphonso P. Pettis Fund and as a library trustee for three years.

Karon Hathaway is mounting a write-in campaign for a three-year term as trustee on the Whiting Street Fund.

Montgomery

Montgomery Town Clerk and Chief Elections Officer Cheryl Masciadrelli announced that the town’s Municipal Election will be held on May 17, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Montgomery Town Hall, 161 Main Rd.  

There are no contested elections this year. Masciadrelli said there are seats that need to be filled, including assessor and School Committee for which nobody took out nomination papers.

The Montgomery Annual Town Meeting will take place on June 14 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
