GRANVILLE – An international clean energy company is offering Granville residents a spot in a community solar power project that would allow them to see some of the benefits of solar power without needing to install panels on their own homes or businesses.
Grasshopper Energy, a company based in Toronto that has recently been making investments and donations in Granville, has set up a 21.5-acre solar power array on Tom Hayes Road. A spokesperson for Grasshopper said that the project could produce more than 8 million kilowatt hours of energy annually, which is the equivalent of 1,258 cars.
Residents can subscribe to the array to receive a credit on their normal electric bill from their share of the array, without needing to install panels on their property. The community solar project will be split evenly between business subscribers and residential subscribers in Granville.
The spokesperson said that 200 free spots remain for Granville residents and residents of surrounding communities to apply. Residents can sign up on Grasshopper’s website.
“We’re excited about working with Grasshopper. They’re helping thousands of residents, including our own, support cleaner, cheaper energy,” said Linda Blakesley, Granville’s town treasurer. “We’re excited to partner with them to provide guaranteed energy savings to our residents.”
Earlier this year, Grasshopper Energy donated $5,000 to the Green Committee to construct a new pavilion on the Town Green. Blakesley, who is also on the Green Committee, said that the donation came just in time, as they did not think they would be able to come up with the funds for a new pavilion.
