RUSSELL – The Russell Cultural Council is looking for new members to vote on arts and cultural events in the community to be funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC).
The largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, the MCC’s Local Cultural Council (LCC) program enriches the cultural life of all cities and towns in Massachusetts. Led by municipally appointed volunteers, LCCs award over $4 million every year, supporting more than 6,000 cultural programs that include everything from field trips to lectures, festivals, and dance performances.
“We’re trying to get a few extra people,” said member Jackie Decker, adding that Local Cultural Council members serve for three years, and they currently have five members. She said they’d like to get some new faces and new ideas for what to fund.
“It’s not an easy job, when it comes to determining,” Decker said. She said funding requests my not match the criteria set by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, or are not a good match for the community.
Decker, who is the chairman of the Council on Aging in Russell, said many of the residents who attend events are seniors.
The Cultural Council meets the first Friday of every month at 11 a.m. at the Russell Senior Center. Anyone interested in joining may call Jackie Decker at 316-0289.
