Santa arrives in Blandford to start Christmas season

Date: 12/6/2023

BLANDFORD — On Saturday, Dec. 2, Blandford showed off its holiday spirit with events all over town.  At the Town Hall, the Blandford Fire Association hosted a pancake breakfast with Santa Claus. Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Ackley said there was a big turnout for the breakfast this year.

“We’re lucky, the people support us quite well here,” he said. “It’s very rare when something comes in and we don’t have somebody to cover it.”

Ackley said Blandford also has tremendous support from Hilltown Ambulance and the Chester-Blandford Police Department and its chief, Jen Dubiel. “They back us up almost every call,” he said.

Outside, in the parking area, the police collected toys for It Takes a Village in Huntington, which distributes diapers, clothing, toys and other necessary items to young families throughout the Hilltowns.

At the Historical Society, artists and artisans displayed their wares, from pottery to paintings to maple syrup. Barb Blair of Maple Corner Farm and crafter Becky Greene said the craft fair which features local vendors is an annual event.

Porter Memorial Library Director Nicole Daviau hosted gingerbread cookie parties for all ages, beginning with gingerbread cookies and crafts for little ones, to whom she read “Gingerbread Baby,” by Jan Brett.

Tweens and teens decorated gingerbread houses made out of pop tarts, some of which suffered earthquakes, according to Daviau, and then adults gathered for an adult cookie social, bringing their own cookies to share.

“A good time was had by all,” Daviau said. “Every year we do this and it’s always a highlight of my library programs.”
