Trunk-or-treat kicks off Halloween season in the Hilltowns

Date: 10/27/2021

HUNTINGTON — Witches, princesses, tot-sized police officers and various goblins and ghouls filled the parking lot of the Huntington Public Library on Oct. 16 for the trunk-or-treat sponsored by the Huntington Recreation Committee.

Committee Chair Vicki Mayhew, who dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West, with her daughter Marissa Mayhew as Dorothy and Parker Affhauser as the Scarecrow, said over 100 children attended, despite having had to move the time up at short notice to avoid an anticipated storm.

The car trunk displays, which every year seem to become more sophisticated and theatrical, didn’t disappoint. Eileen Watson and Bob Goeway, who were the Queen and King of Hearts from “Alice and Wonderland,” were stunning, and the Queen appropriately threatening. They were recognized as best trunk by the committee, and received a $25 gift certificate to Comfort Kitchen.

New resident Kathryn Koegel as Cruella DeVil, and friend Jonathan Dauermann offered up dog biscuit cookies, along with a sign with “puppies for sale.” They also brought their dogs, who were popular with trick-or-treaters.

New residents Dayna Lovell, her son-in-law Andrew Roberts and granddaughter Oona asked for a trick or a joke to get a candy from his car trunk, decorated as a giant mouth. One child asked how you make a witch itch. “Take away the ‘W’” was the answer.

The Huntington Fire Department and Hilltown Community Ambulance participated, handing out treats, as did the Huntington Public Library, where library helpers Tara Kerstetter as Snow Whilte and Angelique Toroni as the Evil Queen gave out children’s books with treats in a bag, to those who dared approach.

Other upcoming Halloween events include the Russell Police Department’s first-ever Haunted Strathmore Park on Oct 30, 4 to 7 p.m. Trunk-or-treating, cotton candy, hot chocolate, popcorn and many other goodies will be on hand for all the little ghosts and goblins, and children of all ages. The event also includes the town’s annual rag shag parade.

Also on Oct. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Emery Park, Chester Recreation and the Chester Hill Association present Halloween Happenings, which will include a trunk-or-treat and haunted trail walk. The rain date is Oct. 31. Volunteers are appreciated, and may contact Stephanie Bodendorf at sbodendorf01011@gmail.com.

Blandford is sponsoring a trunk-or-treat on Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Blandford Town Hall and Watson Park. There will be goodie bags, a bonfire and s’mores, hot cocoa, hot cider, and a Halloween story walk. To participate in the trunk-or-treat, contact Joann at 848-4279, ext. 206.
