CHESTER — On the ballot in the May 6 annual election are unopposed incumbents John Baldasaro, for a three-year term on the Board of Selectmen; Jason Forgue, for a two-year term on the School Committee; Elizabeth Massa, three-year term on the Board of Health; Barbara Huntoon, one-year term as moderator; and Duane Pease, three-year term as electric light commissioner.
Nobody is on the ballot for a one-year term as water commissioner, three-year term as library trustee or three-year term on the School Committee, according to Town Clerk Terry Donovan.
Forgue also recently resigned as a selectman in Chester, but not in time for his seat to appear on this ballot. Donovan said according to the state elections office, the Board of Selectmen can choose to have a special town election or continue on as a two-person board until the next election in 2024. Donovan said the two remaining selectmen, John Baldasaro and Andy Sutton, chose to continue as a two-person board.
Residents could compel them to have a special election by submitting a petition with signatures of 180 voters registered in the town of Chester (20% of registered voters). Once that number of signatures is certified, the board would have 45 days to call a special election. Donovan said the state suggests scheduling the election 64 days after the Board of Selectmen calls for it, to allow enough time for people to pull nomination papers.
Polls in the annual town election will be open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, in Town Hall, 15 Middlefield Rd., Chester.
