RUSSELL — The Westfield River Wildwater Races, one of the country’s oldest whitewater canoe races, returned on April 24 for its 67th run down the Westfield River at the height of its flow.
More 200 paddlers, in about 150 boats, registered for the races that featured experts and novices in both kayaks and canoes braving class 2 and class 3 rapids on two branches of the Westfield River.
The Westfield River Watershed Association sponsored the race that saw of hundreds of spectators line the banks of the river to watch the paddlers use their best boulder-defecting techniques while traveling down the fast-flowing river.
The expert race launched from the Knightville Dam at 9:30 a.m., followed by the classic race, which started at 1 p.m. from downtown Huntington. A Paddlers Party after the race, at Strathmore Park in Russell, featured food, music, entertainment and an awards presentation.
