Candidates submit nomination papers ahead of March 28 election

Date: 2/15/2022

LUDLOW – With just under two months left until the annual town election, candidates for the open positions across town filed their nominations ahead of the Feb. 4 deadline.

In this year’s election, there are open seats for the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Health, the Board of Public Works, the Recreation Commission, the Library Trustees, the Board of Assessors, the School Committee and the Planning Board.

School Committee looks to be the tightest race with six people running for two three-year seats with current Chair Michael Kelliher and member Charles Mullin opting not to run for reelection. Newcomers Angela Maria Anselmo, Ronald Saloio, Karen Mowry, Laura Ann Tuck, Jeffrey Stratton and Michelle Mayou will square off for the two open seats.

With one seat open on the Board of Health, current Chair Michael Lafever will be running against challenger Tony Tavares, the owner of the Villa Rose restaurant.

While Planning Board Vice Chair Joseph Queiroga is running unopposed for the five-year term, current member Joshua Carpenter is running against current associate member Joel Silva for a three-year term.

Along with the contested races for School Committee, Board of Health and Planning Board, there are several uncontested seats in the upcoming election.

For the Board of Selectmen, two seats are available but current Chair William Rosenblum and member Derek DeBarge are both running unopposed for their current seats, both of which are three-year terms.

On the Board of Public Works, Alexander Simao and Matias Goncalves are both running unopposed. For the Recreation Commission, Chair Sean McBride is running unopposed.

Despite open seats for the Library Trustees and the Board of Assessors, no one decided to run for those positions.

On top of all the official positions, there are also openings for all precincts for members of the Representative Town Meeting.

While this is the current landscape of the election, Town Clerk Kim Batista said candidates still can drop out of the race by Feb. 23.

In the coming weeks, Reminder Publishing will be previewing the election with interviews from candidates in the most contested races.
