LUDLOW – Students from Ludlow High School have begun fundraising and practicing their talents for a cooking competition at the Epcot Center at Walt Disney World in Florida. It will take place from April 21 to 24.
Nine students from Ludlow High School will head down south to compete in a hands-on culinary experience against other schools from around the world. Participants will hear from top colleges and universities about career options in the culinary and hospitality field. Cook Around the World gives students the chance to learn and hear from top celebrity chefs as well.
This year’s celebrity host will be Anne Burrell, a famous chef and Food Network personality. She is a co-host on “Worst Cooks in America.”
The trip will last four days with the competition taking place on the second day. There will be multiple cooking classes taking place on the other three days for students to learn.
Participants will also be time to check out the Disney parks and everyone is invited to a gala on the last day with guest speakers and an award ceremony.
Adelei Bernard teaches family consumer science which includes all the culinary classes. She said she has been trying to put this idea together for the last couple years but has had a tough time with travel restrictions because of COVID-19.
Bernard added that the competition will work like the show “Chopped” and each team will get a basket of food that they must include in the dish along with other items they may need from the pantry. They will have 90 minutes to cook.
She hopes this competition makes more students take an interest in the culinary arts.
Bernard said, “By competing the students may realize this is something I want to do when I grow up and gives more options to the kids. It can also advance their skills a little more and help them find a love for cooking.”
She added that this event takes place every year and hopes to be able to send students to compete for many years to come.
