LUDLOW – During the Ludlow School Committee’s Nov. 2 meeting, the committee received an update on the search for a new superintendent.
Committee Vice Chair James Harrington started the superintendent search update conversation by recapping the search committee’s first two meetings.
“The first meeting we had we talked to Mr. Kucher, who is the director of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC), and he came in and gave a presentation about the next steps and we organized ourselves. We met last night and discussed the brochure because you want to highlight your community, the demographics, what the town looks like, the population, the schools, in addition to other information,” he said.
Harrington said the committee’s work is coming along smoothly.
“We are still working on our timeline, but we are still on pace to turn over to this committee in late February a list of candidates so this committee can do their work. We do have the holidays coming up, so we recognize that is something to keep in mind as we move forward,” he said. “It is well underway with a good discussion and a good committee.”
Committee Secretary Jeffery Laing, who also serves on the search committee, said the committee was well on its way to sending a list of candidates on time.
“It is a good group of people and we have made actual progress in two meetings, and we have a schedule, we are establishing a timeline, everything is going well and we decided to do that without spending $10,000 on the town side so I am confident we will be able to succeed at this,” he said.
Harrington added the committee would be working closely with MASC throughout the search process.
“MASC, which is the organization we have belonged to for the past 75 years, they provide a lot of these services out of our dues that we normally pay anyways so they are going to graphically put together our brochure, they are going to get the word out,” he said.
Harrington also encouraged residents to come to a search committee meeting to discuss their thoughts about the search while the committee will reach out to other stakeholders to listen to their opinions.
“We are going to be reaching out to stakeholders like the director of the Boys and Girls Club, the police chief, the fire chief, the director of Veterans Services, everybody in town. We want to give them a chance to express their opinions on it and we will formulate our questions from there,” he said.
During her regular report, acting Superintendent Lisa Nemeth said the district was in search of help to fill positions at all levels.
“We still need substitute teachers, we are very short on those, our paraprofessionals, our bus drivers, our cafeteria workers and I actually just had our facilities manager come and say we do not have subs for custodians,” she said.
Anyone interested in any of the open positions can reach out to the district’s central office at 583-8372.
The School Committee next meets on Nov. 16 and coverage of that meeting will appear in the Nov. 25 edition of The Reminder.
