LUDLOW – This year’s town election will take place on March 27 with 15 positions needing to be filled.
There are no contested races, but that level of participation is nothing unusual in Ludlow, according to Town Clerk Kim Batista.
“We don’t usually have trouble finding candidates. Most seats are filled, which important,” she said.
Batista added, “It all depends on if people are interested. Last year we had a contested School Committee race but that is about it.”
Batista said that she cannot speak for other town elections, but this type of participation can be seen because a lot of people may not have the time or interest.
The openings for this year’s election includes: a member for the Board of Selectmen, town clerk, tax collector, town moderator, one Board of Assessors member, one Board of Health member, a library trustee, two Board of Public Works members, a Recreation Commission member, two openings for the School Committee and one opening for the Planning Board.
All the positions terms are for three years besides the Planning Board, which is a five-year term.
There are also two openings for the Ludlow Housing Authority. One term is a two-year unexpired term and the other is a one-year expired term.
There is only one nomination for each position besides tax collector, housing authority member and Board of Public Works member. No one took out nomination papers for those positions, according to Batista.
Those positions without a candidate can be filled by a write-in registered voter.
Batista said in terms of how to win as a write-in vote, you need “one more than someone else, in other words, whomever receives the most votes wins.”
The nomination papers were due to the Town Clerk’s office by Feb. 3.
The candidates for each position are Antonio Goncalves for the Board of Selectmen, Kim Batista for town clerk, Michael Szlosek for town moderator, Michael O’Rourke for the Board of Assessors, Adrienne DeSantis for the Board of Health, Linda Collette for Trustee of Hubbard Memorial Library, Jon Baldwin for Housing Authority (two-year unexpired term), Daniel Soares for the Board of Public Works, John Archambeau for Recreation Commission, Jeffrey Laing for School Committee, Joao Dias for School Committee and Joel Silva for Planning Board.
Archambeau and Dias are the only two nominees who are not running incumbent.
Batista said the polls are open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The polling locations area follows: Precinct 1 is Harris Brook Elementary School, Fuller Street; Precinct 2 is Paul R. Baird Middle School, Rooney Road; Precinct 3 is Ludlow High School, Chapin Street; Precinct 4 is East Street School, East Street; Precinct 5 is First Church of Ludlow, Center/Church Streets; and Precinct 6 is Paul R. Baird Middle School, Rooney Road.
Those with questions can call the clerk’s office at 583-5600, ext. 1230.
