LUDLOW — The Ludlow branch of LUSO Federal Credit Union has opened its first Little Free Library, a tiny house attached to a post outside its main entrance at 599 East St. where visitors are invited to borrow, keep or donate books. Students can find picture and board books as well as early readers and chapter books. While adults can find hard-and soft-cover options for both fiction and non-fiction, regularly stocked by staff.
“We are thrilled to be able to participate in the Little Free Library movement,” said Marketing Director Jennifer Lopez. “A lot of the members of our staff are big readers. Myself included, the CEO and the COO. If you go into the LUSO branch there will be a stack of books for our staff members. After the staff has read something, we’ll put it on a table to share it.”
She continued, “We found out about the Little Free Library program and because we already had this idea to share books that we enjoyed amongst ourselves, we decided to share it with the community at large. The purpose of the Little Free Library is to increase the possibilities for individuals to obtain reading material. This is another fun option for people who are avid readers to expand their horizon.”
Established in 1971, LUSO Federal Credit Union is a local, member-owned financial institution that offers full-service personal and business banking to anyone living or working in Hampden County. With locations in Ludlow and Wilbraham, LUSO provides its members with quality financial services and products. In addition to checking, savings and investment products. LUSO also offers auto and real estate loans, financial management services, credit cards, insurance, and an in-school banking program for area students.
The Little Free Library program started in 2009 by Todd Bol of Wisconsin, who built a model of a one-room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former schoolteacher who loved reading. He put the small structure on a post in his front yard and filled it with books that passersby could borrow or keep. Today, more than 150,000 registered Little Free Library book-sharing boxes are in 120 countries worldwide.
“We anticipate maintaining this Little Free Library going forward,” Lopez replied. “I love reading and I love to share some of our favorite books with visitors to LUSO’s Little Free Library.”
The Little Free Library book-sharing boxes are open 24 hours a day and are freely accessible to anyone. LUSO’s second Little Free Library is currently in development and will soon be available at the Wilbraham branch in Crane Park.
