Summer programs set to return to Whitney Park

Date: 5/27/2022

LUDLOW – With summer fast approaching, residents will have the opportunity to send their children to Whitney Park for its annual summer camp program.

Recreation Department Office Assistant Debbie Gates added there are plenty of activities on tap for children during summer camp.

“The day is pretty much planned out for them, they do arts and crafts, they do sports, they do games, they do walking field trips, they go to the pool every day, weather permitting,” she said. “This year we may try to bring back bus trips, we haven’t been doing them because of COVID [-19] but that is something the co-directors will have to figure out.”

Gates said sign ups for summer camp are open through June 27, the first day of camp. The camp runs from that date through Aug. 12.

While she said the price varies depending on the number of children signing up in a single family, Gates said the price per single child is $385. That cost covers the cost for a child participating in all seven weeks of camp.

Anyone who lives outside of Ludlow but works in town can also enroll their child in the program. In this case, interested parents are required to bring a picture ID, their child’s birth certificate, a copy of their child’s shot records and two recent pay stubs as proof of employment. Gates said there are only 20 spots open for out-of-town residents. Residents are also required to bring two proofs of residency and a copy of their child’s shot records. Both must pay with cash or by money order.

Gates said anyone interested in enrolling their children in the summer camp program is required to come into the office at Whitney Park to submit their paperwork.

“They have to sign up at Whitney Park only because you have to show proof of residency in order to come to the program and if you are from out of town you have to show proof that you work in town. We can’t put them online because we need that in order to give out an application,” she said.

Along with summer camp, Gates said the department also hosts a before and after school program and runs the Thompson Pool at Whitney Park. The department also has pool passes available and the pool is also open for birthday parties by calling the department.
