MONSON – It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is already fast approaching. Before you know it, you’ll be struggling to decide what to buy your closest friends and family. If you’re looking for something creative and handmade, Dave’s Wood Carvings can help.
Dave Cavannah began wood carving as a hobby about six years ago. He got his start when he was working for a tree removal company.
“I had some downtime and so I carved a face in one of the tree stumps and some of the guys said, ‘Wow that’s pretty good,’ so it kind of motivated me to get going on it,” said Cavannah.
Cavannah now makes and sells unique wood carving sculptures, picnic tables, benches, wishing wells, yard furniture and more on his Facebook page, Dave’s Wood Carvings.
“It’s something I enjoy doing – bringing a dead tree back to life. It’s very rewarding to drive around and see some of the wood carvings that I’ve done at different people’s houses,” said Cavannah.
Some of his favorite carved pieces have been custom pet sculptures and he also makes several welcome bears, owls and eagle carvings.
“I like to say, ‘Your vision is my goal.’ If someone has something in mind that they want to have done I try to bring that to life with a chainsaw and the wood,” said Cavannah.
Pricing for Cavannah’s sculptures varies, but he said that a small welcome bear can go for anywhere between $80 to $100. His work is hand-carved, sealed when completed and made with attention to detail and care.
“I definitely enjoy doing the work and there’s self-satisfaction in taking a piece of wood and turning it into a beautiful sculpture. It definitely touches my heart the most to see the customer’s reaction when they’re blown away and very happy with the result,” said Cavannah.
Those interested in ordering a sculpture, especially for the holiday season, are encouraged to reach out to Cavannah as soon as possible. He said that the holidays are his busiest time.
“People are looking for something you can’t buy in a store and something to surprise someone,” said Cavannah.
Each piece can take around two to three weeks to complete.
One of his future goals is to turn his hobby into a brick-and-mortar business.
“I’m hoping in a few years I’ll go legit and actually have a business and maybe buy a commercial property somewhere where I can set up,” said Cavannah.
For now, he enjoys taking custom orders and showcasing his work on Facebook.
“I enjoy every carving. It’s always nice to see the customer’s reaction when they’re happy and seeing their vision come to life,” said Cavannah.
