Fireworks postponed, but Summerfest still celebrates family, community

Date: 7/12/2023

MONSON — Due to inclement weather, Monson Summerfest Inc. postponed its fireworks event that was scheduled for June 24. It’s now set for July 22 at Quarry Hill Community School fields with a rain date of July 23. Lots will open at 5 p.m. and there is a $5 per car parking fee. There will be food booths, a magic show, bounce houses, a beer garden and live entertainment by The Beginning and Hollywood Roxx. At dusk, a fireworks show will be presented by Pyrotecnico.

Chairman Stephen Slozak said, “This is our 44th year doing the fireworks. It’s important to recognize our independence. It also gives a chance for a lot of people in town to meet friends they haven’t seen in a while and the Summerfest brings that together.”

Monson Summerfest Inc. is a nonprofit organization started in 1979 by a group of people that wanted an Independence Day celebration focusing on family and community. The first Summerfest took place at the Methodist Church. Then it moved out onto Main Street up until last year.

This past week, Summerfest had its Fourth of July Parade that went from the Small Animal Clinic down to Memorial Hall. Despite Mother Nature, the event went very well with a lot of compliments and thank yous. The theme for the parade was “Our Town Working Together.” The myriad marshals were the Monson town departments and myMonson was selected Business of the Year.

Slozak told Reminder Publishing they tried to do this a few years back to recognize the town departments for the Summerfest.

He stated, “Not only is it just our committee that does a lot of work, we rely on some of the town departments, Police Department, Fire Department, the parks and recreation mow the grounds for us and the highway department that sets up the fences for the fireworks.”

He went on to say, “We try to recognize some organizations and businesses in the town who are instrumental and go above and beyond to help us put this on either through donations or help behind the scenes.”

After the parade, there were games, crafters and vendors at Veteran’s Field throughout the day. Along with an animal presentation and musical performances from Sarah the Fiddler and the James Paul Band. Slozak hopes Summerfest will continue on and more people especially the young ones to get involved.
