Granite Valley School STEAM night brings together parents, students

Date: 4/11/2023

MONSON — Granite Valley School hosted a STEAM night on April 6, where students in grades 4-6, faculty and families were able to come together, learn something new and enjoy getting to know a little bit about what the students are learning and doing.

The event had five different classrooms and the gym open for activities — one location for each letter of the anacronym. Science Challenge, Technology Challenge, Engineering Challenge, Art/Architecture Challeng, and Math Games were each a focus, and there was plenty to do at each location. The Parent Teacher Student Organization was raffling off a handmade quilt and there was a school raffle for several bags of prizes as well.

Assistant Principal Myriah Hudak said, “We wanted to do some hands-on activities, science events, math activities, for parents and adults. When you walk around you see parents and kids doing activities together, which is awesome. There’s lots of different things going on.” Hudak added, “I think it’s exciting for us to welcome our families back into the building – last year with covid it was a little wacky, this year we’ve really been able to bring families in and that’s something we want to continue going forward. To see parents and kids playing together is pretty awesome.”

Walking into the gym, there were several stations set up, and parents and students worked together to solve the Art/Architecture Challenges, like the paper skyscraper challenge that called for building the tallest possible structure using only masking tape and strips of paper.

Each classroom had stations set up for students and parents to try their hand at, from programming motorized bots to get to a space rock sample and back to home base, to investigating how colors interact with one another, and demonstrations of conversions and inclusions of energy.
