Monson Lions Club seeks entries for poster contest about peace

Date: 10/30/2023

MONSON — The Monson Lions Club is seeking children age 11-13 for the International Peace Poster Contest, the organization recently announced.

The event, organized by Lions Club International, has taken place annually for over 30 years and offers children a chance to share their visual ideas of peace, according to Lions Club International’s website.
The local Lions Club chapter is looking for at least 10 children to sponsor for the competition. Children who wish to enter Monson’s local competition must submit an original poster representing this year’s theme “Dare to Dream” to the club by Nov. 6, Monson Lions Club member Laura Villamaino said. One winning poster will then be selected and sent to the regional competition by Nov. 15.

The event is divided into local, regional, national, and international stages with the winner of the international stage being awarded $5,000 and a trip to an award ceremony. There will also be 23 merit awards given out for $500 each, Villamaino explained.

Posters will be judged based on originality, artistic merit, and adherence to the theme, according to the Official Club Contest Guide.

The Monson Lions Club will also be sponsoring children with visual impairments to be part of the Lions International Peace Essay Contest, which follows the same rules and deadlines as the poster contest. The contest rules state that essays should be typed in double spaced English and contain no more than 500 words.

The local competition is primarily for Monson residents. However, for both competitions, the Monson Lions Club has agreed to sponsor children from surrounding towns without Lions clubs.
