Monson Skate Park improvements allow for multi-age use

Date: 6/6/2022

MONSON – Recent improvements to the Monson Skate Park have made the sport more inclusive for all ages.

Timothy Pascale, Parks and Recreation director, said prior to the improvements made to the skate park at Veterans Field, 110 Main St., there was equipment on two-thirds of the pavement pad. “That was meant for older kids and adults,” he said.

Through a grant provided by the Community Preservation Committee (CPC), Pascale said they were able to secure funding for the remaining one-third and install a ramp for younger kids who are beginning or still learning.

“It’s made to be less intimidating for younger kids,” said Pascale.
He noted that they also installed some closures to put under the ramps, in an effort to avoid littering or trash build up.

All of the skate park improvements were completed in the beginning of May. The total cost rounded out at about $18,000.

Pascale said, “[We] are thankful to the townspeople,” who voted to approve the funding at Annual Town Meeting.

He went on to say that he’s looking forward to the skate park’s use, as it’s a “busy place.” The new addition will also allow for kids to be more spread out, added Pascale.

Additional offerings

Pascale shared some additional Parks and Recreation offerings for the upcoming season.

Last fall, pickleball courts were installed at Veterans Field. When spring hit, the courts were officially opened for use. Pascale said residents have been taking advantage of the new offering, especially on weeknights and weekends.

Another popular activity in town is disc golf. Pascale said they have been adding some different pieces to the course at 25 Park Rd.
The town is currently accepting registration for summer camps. Pascale said the majority of camps will take place in July and one in August, at Quarry Hill School.

Registration can be done online at https://www.monson-ma.gov/parks-recreation-department, or in-person at the Town Hall during office hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Pascale encourages online registration as they are unable to accept cards in the office.

Looking further into 2022, Pascale said they plan to install a friendship swing at Flynt Park by the fall. The swing allows two people to swing on one piece of equipment at the same time. The funding for the swing was voted on and approved at Annual Town Meeting.

Additionally, Pascale said they plan to offer ice skating again this winter. Last year, the tennis courts were transformed into an ice rink. “People enjoyed it a lot,” he said. As it was the first time offering this activity, Pascale viewed it as a “trial,” to learn and plan for a more successful season this year.
