Monson town administrator addresses irregular trash pick-ups

Date: 9/21/2022

MONSON – For several months, irregular trash pick-up by Republic Services has caused concern for many Monson residents. During the Sept. 13 Select Board meeting, Town Administrator Jennifer Wolowicz addressed those concerns.

She shared that the “constant irregular service” has been occurring since June.

Wolowicz noted that many residents have expressed issues with Republic Services through phone calls, emails, letters and more. “It’s definitely something we’ve been working on, on a daily basis,” she said.
She continued, “I did invite the team from Republic to meet with me last month and expressed our concerns and told them that we definitely need to see some type of financial rebate to one of our monthly bills.”

Wolowicz explained that the town pays a monthly fee to Republic. Twice a year, residents pay their trash fees to the town. “It’s an enterprise fund which means that the monies do not sit in the General Fund, they sit in a separate fund. The trash rate is set each year based on what our approximate cost from the vendors is going to be and then what we have in the retained earnings of the Trash Enterprise Fund,” she said.

As a result of the ongoing issues, Wolowicz shared that the town will be receiving a credit of $1,500 to their September bill. That money will go into the enterprise fund to be used toward the next trash rate.

She noted that residents’ complaints have calmed down a bit, however, it is an ongoing process that they continue to monitor.

Special Town Meeting

Wolowicz said they are looking to host a Special Town Meeting on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at Granite Valley Middle School.

The Select Board approved the proposed meeting date.
