Teacher and coach transitions to MHS’ new athletic director

Date: 7/21/2022

MONSON – Zac Dreher is working as the new athletic director at Monson High School after taking over the role from Leah Zippin.

Dreher earned his Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education and Mathematics at Elms College before going on to receive his master’s in athletic administration from Southern New Hampshire University.

Dreher has been working for Monson Public Schools for four years and began his career teaching math at Granite Valley School before moving up to the high school.

“I was already coaching up there. I was coaching basketball and baseball, so it kind of just made sense for me to be working at the high school as well,” said Dreher.

According to Dreher, Monson High School Principal Matthew Sullivan approached him midway through the 2020-2021 school year to let him know Zippin was leaving the role of athletic director.

Sullivan thought that Dreher would be a good fit, and the opportunity progressed from there.

Since taking on the role last spring, Dreher said he has enjoyed it immensely.

“I’m really enjoying my new role. I actually took over in the middle of the state playoffs for basketball which our girl’s team was in, so that was really an exciting way to start my new job,” he said.

His duties consist of scheduling games, buses, referees, on-site management and making sure everything is running smoothly for all teams.

With the new school year approaching, Dreher said that he is excited to continue this position and to learn more about a variety of sports.

“What’s been really good is just learning about a lot of the sports that I haven’t played. Growing up I played basketball, football and baseball, so just learning about the sports has really been interesting. I also plan to definitely stay involved in coaching. I thought I was done, but I think I’m going to stay on coaching basketball this year,” said Dreher.
