The Better Bean aims to be where coffee, community meet

Date: 8/23/2023

MONSON — The smell of fresh brewed coffee and pastries waft through the air as soon as the door opens.

The warm and welcoming environment of 186 Main St. is homey, with its clean and comfortable atmosphere and walls decorated with regional artwork and quaint displays. Amanda Roy wanted to create a place where people could feel comfortable and relaxed, and she certainly succeeded.

“Monson doesn’t really have a small coffee shop like this. I saw that there was a need for one,” said Roy.

Tracy Murphy, an employee at The Better Bean, added, “We opened on July 29, and business has been booming ever since.” She wasn’t exagerating. The door was constantly swinging open, and every customer appeared to have a pleasant experience with The Better Bean staff.

“I used to own a coffee shop in Plymouth for 10 years. Ever since my ankle injury, I had to come back home to heal,” said Roy, who grew up in town and has moved back while she recovers. Yet, despite wearing an ankle boot on her foot, Roy still shows up each day.

While the coffee shop doesn’t offer indoor seating, Roy says she prefers it this way. She noted that in the warmer seasons, customers often sit across the street in the new Adoridak chairs or in the gazebo to enjoy their beverages and treats.

“I already did the whole ‘big coffee shop’ thing in Plymouth. I like the setup just the way it is, and I don’t plan to expand,” said Roy.

During the interview with Reminder Publishing, friends, family, and town employees stopped in to visit Roy and support her mission. Each encounter was unique and personal. Her personality shines through in her business.

“I love seeing my old teachers and friends from high school,” said Roy.

Police Chief Stephen Kozloski, along with officers Mai Grover and Paul Mayo, were among the many patrons who stopped by for a quick pick-me-up and chat with Roy.

Just like the customer base, the drink selection is very diverse. Drinks like ‘smores iced coffee, passionfruit iced tea, and French vanilla hot coffee are among the most popular.

“We like to be as inclusive as possible with our food selection. We offer gluten-free, vegan, and dairy-free options, especially since a lot of the girls who work here are lactose intolerant as well,” said Roy.

Overnight oats, fresh parfaits, and a variety of wraps are just some of the options offered for grab-and-go meals.

The Better Bean is open Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Better Bean is currently hiring for barista and kitchen positions. For more information, visit betterbeancafe.com.
