Town of Monson employees challenge MSB in competition

Date: 6/6/2022

MONSON – A month-long Step-Up Fitness Challenge is underway between employees of the town of Monson and Monson Savings Bank, to see who can log the most average miles per person.

The competition is sponsored by Health New England, as both the town and Monson Savings Bank are clients of theirs. Health New England will award $500 to the winner’s charity of choice.

Timothy Chrystal, director of sales at Health New England, said this first-time event is an effort to keep wellness going and promote healthy living, as it has been a struggle since the start of COVID-19.

On May 31, representatives from the town of Monson, Monson Savings Bank and Health New England gathered at Veterans Field for a kick-off event. Here, Town Administrator Jennifer Wolowicz formally challenged Monson Savings Bank President and CEO Daniel Moriarty, to which he accepted.

Wolowicz said health is the most important aspect to be productive in the workplace. She shared that the town’s charity of choice is Shriners Hospital for Children. “I’m a Shriners kid and my husband [is] as well,” said Wolowicz.

Moriarty said that Monson Savings Bank is “always up for a good challenge.” He shared that their charity of choice is Educare, an early childhood school in Springfield that provides low to moderate-income families with a fair chance for success.

As this is the Bank’s 150th Anniversary, Moriarty said they are also having an internal competition for employees partaking in the challenge. The competition is for team members to collectively complete 150 miles each day. If this goal is reached, all participants will receive a special prize.

Wolowicz and Moriarty expressed their gratitude to Health New England for hosting this friendly competition.

The two teams completed their first mile together as they traveled down Gate, Cushman, Main and State Street.

In addition to the $500 charitable donation and bragging rights, the winner will receive a trophy.
