NORTHAMPTON – On Jan. 17, Indivisible Northampton sponsored a rally in front of City Hall to commemorate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and advocate for the passing of the voting rights legislation that would create national standards for future voting and elections.
The gathering specifically focused on advocating for the passing of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act that recently passed in the House of Representatives. The new bill would make it easier for groups to challenge racially discriminatory laws and expand voting access across the country. It would also make Election Day a federal holiday and create standardized election laws throughout the country.
Both Congressman Jim McGovern and Northampton City Council member Garrick Perry spoke at the gathering to talk about King’s legacy and advocate for these election bills.
“These attempts of voter suppression are deeply rooted in racism,” said McGovern, referring to lack of voter equity across the country. “What is happening in this country is unconscionable.”
Perry, who is the second African American to be on the City Council in Northampton’s history, agreed with McGovern’s sentiments and offered his own perspective on the matter.
“There are people working to erode and undermine our democracy,” said Perry. “We cannot let legislation move forward in the dark that erodes our rights. “It’s imperative that we establish a national voting standard to ensure that every voice is heard.”
Attendees were encouraged to call the White House and senators to ask them to push for the passage of the bills.
