Hosmer Gallery seeks artists, writers for online exhibition

Date: 6/8/2021

NORTHAMPTON – The Hosmer Gallery at Forbes Library in Northampton invites artists and writers to submit work for an online exhibition highlighting the interconnectedness of planetary and human health.

From July 5 to Sept. 5, the exhibition will be displayed online for public viewing. The deadline for submissions has been extended to June 26.

Faith Kaufmann, head of arts and music/information services co-coordinator at Forbes Library, said Hosmer is a nonprofit, community art gallery.

“Since 2002, we have been having exhibits by local artists and groups in the library,” she explained.

When COVID-19 shut down Forbes, they decided to turn the Hosmer Galley virtual.

Forbes’ website reads,  “As we emerge slowly from the COVID-19 pandemic, we reflect on how it has changed us, the environment we live in, and our outlook.  While our societies and our world are still in the midst of enormous changes, how do we feel about our role? How has the past year impacted how we relate to the environment and to each other? Have our priorities changed?

“Residents of Western Massachusetts and Five College students are eligible to submit work for consideration. There is a limit of five submissions per person. Forbes Library Arts & Music staff will select individual pieces to be included. For visual art, include a brief artist’s statement to be displayed with the work.”

Exhibit organizers envision a range of creative work that engages with ongoing issues and how they intersect. Some of these issues include the pandemic, climate change, sustainability, health equality and so on.

As of press time, 10 people had submitted their work. This ranges from visual artists, to writers, poetry, videos, paintings and more, said Kaufmann.

She emphasized, this exhibit is meant for everyone in the community.

“It’s one of those things …  The pandemic and shutdown made us do things differently. People are still making art and need to share it with the community, ” said Kaufmann.

Forbes Library is searching for ways to be more accessible both online, while also serving the community as a whole.

“This is the first, but probably not the last online [exhibit],” Kaufmann predicted.

Forbes Library is hoping to have the Hosmer Gallery open by September. Once the exhibit opens, Kaufmann expressed, “We will have a year’s worth of exhibits to show.”
