Northampton mayor raises Ukrainian flag, calls for end to suffering

Date: 4/19/2022

NORTHAMPTON – In solidarity with the Ukrainian people impacted by the invasion of Russian military forces, Mayor Gina-Louise Sciarra, city officials and members of the community gathered on April 13 in front of Memorial Hall to raise the Ukrainian flag.

“Northampton is a community committed to the ideals of freedom and democracy, and we recognize our responsibility to call out tyranny and injustice,” said Sciarra, during the event. “We take a stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine who are resisting this armed-attack on their lives and their independence, and we are proud to join others in our country and around the world in flying the Ukrainian flag to call for an end to these atrocities by Vladimir Putin and the Russian armed forces.”

Northampton joins other communities in Western Massachusetts like Amherst, Holyoke, Chicopee and Ludlow that are flying the Ukrainian flag to call for an end to the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

The Ukrainian flag was donated by Tanya Dragan, a Ukrainian-American resident of Northampton.
