Northampton receives state Climate Resilience grant

Date: 9/12/2023

NORTHAMPTON — Northampton was one of 28 municipalities in Massachusetts that received money as part of the state’s MVP 2.0 program.

According to Carolyn Misch, Northampton’s director of planning and sustainability, the city received $95,000 as part of the program, which particularly focuses on those most impacted by the climate change crisis.

“These grants are specifically targeted at planning and process for inclusion of engagement in that planning process for members of the community at greatest risk related to impacts of climate change,” Misch said in a statement to Reminder Publishing.

A total of $31.5 million in climate resiliency funding was administered by the Healey-Driscoll administration at the end of August, and about $3 million of that money was used for the MVP 2.0 program. The other $28 million will go toward 79 local implementation projects across the state.

The administration launched the MVP 2.0 pilot program back in April as a way to support cities and towns across Massachusetts in updating and putting their climate change resiliency plans into action.

“The climate crisis is one of our greatest challenges, but there is enormous opportunity in our response. We have the science, data, tools and commitment to help communities understand how climate change impacts them and take action to advance resiliency and preparedness,” said Gov. Maura Healey at the time. “With the next phase of the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program, we will harness the incredible resources at our disposal and bring people together to protect our environment, grow our economy and build a more resilient future.”

The funding specifically provides funding and technical support to communities to identify climate hazards, develop strategies to improve resilience and implement priority actions to adapt to climate change throughout the state.
