Fundraiser created for Palmer resident paralyzed in motorcycle accident

Date: 11/7/2023

PALMER — A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Corey Miller, an 18-year-old Palmer resident who was paralyzed after a commercial van collided with his motorcycle on Sept. 11.

Miller was driving to his second job when the van hit his motorcycle and caused life-threatening injuries, Lisa Latwis, Miller’s aunt and the creator of the fundraiser, wrote on the GoFundMe page.

Following the accident, Miller was taken to Baystate Hospital, then to Spaulding Rehabilitation Center in Boston to receive spinal treatment for his paralysis from the chest down, Latwis explained. At the time of the accident, Miller was working two jobs to get ahead after graduating high school a year early.

“It’s tough. He was a young kid just getting started and now everything has changed in his life,” Latwis said, “There’s going to be a lot of care needed.”

In the fundraiser’s description, Latwis stated that Miller will permanently use both a specially designed wheelchair and specific clothing, as well as long-term medical care for his injuries. The fundraiser has a goal of $25,000, which is designed to help Miller and his family with the financial burden of his required care, Latwis said.

“Corey is going to need care for the rest of his life,” she said. Latwis explained that she intends to leave the fundraiser open for as long as possible to help ensure the requested funds are reached.
