Light Up Palmer brightens community with holiday cheer

Date: 12/6/2022

PALMER – On Nov. 26, Light Up Palmer hosted their third annual Community Celebration at Depot Park on the corner of Main and Walnut Street in downtown Palmer.

The event was packed with families as they mingled around drinking hot chocolate, eating s’mores and cotton candy while enjoying the musical stylings of Noah Lis. The celebration also featured ice sculpting by Michael Rondeau, face painting, a photo booth and free train rides from the Roaming Railroad, sponsored by Bertera Chevrolet, to commemorate the festivity. Also, the Palmer Fire Department, the Girl Scouts of Swift River Service Unit #170 of Palmer and Ware, Amherst Railway Society, Country Bank, North Brookfield Savings Dunkin Donuts and Springfield Thunderbirds mascot Boomer joined in on the fun keeping families entertained and on their toes.

Light Up Palmer is an all-volunteer committee under the nonprofit organization, Palmer Business Partnership. Their mission is to improve Palmer’s business district by promoting and enhancing the visual quality and appearance of the downtown areas. Since 2019, they’ve continued to decorate both the street and vacant buildings as well as putting together downtown events.

Chair Chris Smith said, “The holiday campaign that started in 2019 has evolved to a year-round improvement of our visual appearance of downtown Palmer. We’re a small community, so any gathering of people in our town is very important.”

She continued, “I love seeing the community come together as it was many years ago. Palmer is the town of seven railroads. We are the crossroads in the heart of Route 20 and 32. Many of us grew up here knowing a different Palmer and this grassroots effort has brought the community back together.”
