Lix and Stix owner honors memory of furry companion

Date: 7/19/2023

PALMER — Karen Duquette, owner of Lix & Stix Candle Co., will be releasing a new candle in two weeks called Harley’s Dream in honor of her bullmastiff dog Harley, who died in January of 2023.

In addition, Duquette is also coming out with her summer line of four scents: whipped limoncello, spiced citronella, waterfall mist and beach santal.

“It’s great to be back up and running,” said Duquette. “I take a lot of pride in making these candles. I put a lot of care into them and put a lot of love into what I do.”

Harley was the inspiration behind Lix & Stix, a home-based business she started in January of 2022 using ingredients such as 100% all-natural soy wax, crackling wooden wicks, premium fragrance oils and essential oils. When Duquette started, she wanted something that will carry Harley’s memory long after he’s gone. The name Lix is how dogs give kisses and Stix for both the wooden wicks and the sticks Harley loved to chase around the yard.

“It broke my heart,” Duquette said. “Harley had two huge masses in his abdomen and one of them was pressing on his organs causing him to bleed internally.”

She continued, “He was a lovable, well-liked dog. Every candle I make, with every logo on every sticker and wood wick I use, Harley will forever be part of my candle making journey.”

Harley’s Dream consists of different notes of creamy vanilla. The name of the scent is called Cake with Harley’s face on the label.

Duquette will be donating a portion of the proceeds from Harley’s Dream to an animal shelter. Duquette’s goal this year is trying to get a small store where she can possibly do candles as well as having smoothies and nutritional snacks. She has revamped Lix & Stix by working on a new website, which will be ready in a couple of weeks, and a new label.

“I make candles because I love it and I know the biggest thing for me now that Harley is gone that I’m truly making all of these in memory of him,” Duquette said. “I’m happy to get back into the business and I’m really passionate about it. Hopefully, some goals pan out with it.”

Duquette will be at Westview Creamery in Monson for its Christmas in July on July 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
