Recreation Department prepares for end of summer celebration

Date: 8/25/2021

SOUTH HADLEY – The South Hadley Recreation Department will host their annual South Hadley Fireworks event on Sept. 4 at the Michael E. Smith Middle School, with a rain date of Sept. 5. Festivities begin at 3 p.m. and the show will commence at 8:15 p.m.

“It’s a free event for people to come together and have a part of a traditional American summer. This is our last large summer event before we transition into our normal fall programming. We do have a couple more concerts at the Town Common on Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. and Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.,” Recreation Director Andy Rogers told Reminder Publishing.

The South Hadley Lions Club, the Second Baptist Church and the South Hadley Girl Scouts will be some of the vendors selling food. In addition, they'll have some food trucks like the Nom Nom Hunt, Shoobie Doobie Juicy and Taylor Spring Farm this year for the first time to give people a variety of food options. “We’re still working through with them on exactly what they’re going to do, but we’re going to have some other food options; a lemonade stand and traditional fair food,” Roger explained.

PeoplesBank, SHELD/Fibersonic, IGM - Ledges Golf, Metras Insurance, Beers and Story Funeral Home South Hadley and Veryl’s Automotive are all key sponsors at the event. SHELD will be providing information about Fibersonic. The Valley Bike Share will be doing a bike display for the Valley Bike program that is located all over Western Massachusetts. For the kids, there will be face painting and bounce houses. There will also be a soccer blow-up with the high school girls soccer team, a DJ in the main parking lot and the South Hadley Community Band will be playing patriotic tunes as they get closer to the show.

As for safety measures, Rogers said the department will follow whatever the state says at that time for that kind of specific program in regard to COVID-19. Right now, there are no restrictions from the state as far as outdoor events like this, so there are no limitations on crowds or how people have to sit or stand or wear masks. Rogers said they encourage people who are unvaccinated to wear masks.

“I’m expecting an enormous turnout this year for a few reasons,” Rogers responded. “One, we were cancelled in 2020 because of COVID and it’s the first time we are having it since 2019.  Also, we’re probably the only firework show in the region that weekend. Based on other events we've done this summer, people are looking for stuff to do outside.”
