SOUTH HADLEY – In a Memorial Day celebration, veterans and residents of South Hadley met on May 21 for a flagging of veteran’s graves at Notre Dame and Mater Dolorosa Cemeteries.
Brian Willette, post commander of South Hadley American Legion Post 260, was the main speaker of the event and talked about the history of Memorial Day to residents and members of Scout Troop 303 and the South Hadley Sons of the American Legion. Willette said it’s the duty as organized veterans to make sure these celebrations happen year to year.
“Here in South Hadley we concentrate on the youth element of our sons. We make sure they are present at these events,” Willette said. “Our job is to make sure the future generations, the youth, know it’s importance and why it’s done.”
Following the ceremony that included readings, a gun salute and the performance of taps, those in attendance took the time to plant flags next to the grave stones of veterans.
