South Hadley Public Library to host unique online programming

Date: 2/9/2021

SOUTH HADLEY – South Hadley residents will have the opportunity to learn more about antiques through a unique virtual program at the South Hadley Public Library.

Adult Services Librarian Desiree Smelcer said the virtual program called “What’s It Worth?” is similar to an antiques roadshow. She said the program first came into fruition after the library was contacted by Mike Ivankovich.

“He is actually out of Pennsylvania and he actually emailed me,” she said. Smelcer said Ivankovich is an author, auctioneer, appraiser and hosts a radio show. She described the event as similar to the PBS program, “Antique Road Show.” She said while she doesn’t “own a single antique,” she “know[s] a lot of people who love antiques and do that.”

The first 30 people who sign up for the Zoom event will have the opportunity to have a single item appraised by Ivankovich. She said while there’s only room for 30 appraisals, there’s room for up to 100 people total to join the two-hour Zoom event on Feb. 20.

She said this is the first time the library has done a program such as this. “It’s brand new,” she said. As someone who has undergraduate training in archival studies said the most similar thing she’d ever done was help people understand how to preserve and store documents properly.

However, she said the benefit of events such as this is that “you can just sit and listen.” Additionally, she said, each event is recorded and then posted so people can enjoy it again at a later date if needed. She said while some speakers are paid by the library, some volunteer their time, but all programming is free.

At the time of press, eight of the 30 initial spaces were still left for a chance to get an item appraised.
