Date: 4/19/2021

SOUTH HADLEY – Voters in South Hadley went to the polls for their annual town election on April 13 where they elected several new town representatives.

According to the unofficial town election results, which were posted on the town clerk’s page, a total of 2,050 South Hadley voters cast ballots resulting in a voter turnout of just over 17 percent. Among contested races were two open seats on the South Hadley Selectboard and the South Hadley School Committee.

The two open seats on the School Committee come after Chairperson Kyle Belanger and member Christine Phillips announced earlier in the year they would not be seeking re-election to the committee. Four candidates stepped up to announce their intention to seek election to the committee including Danielle Cooke, Jennifer Matos, Brian Morris and Roxanne Sprague. Ultimately, Cooke and Matos received the highest number of votes with Cooke receiving 1,078 and Matos earning 1,085. Morris received 697 votes while Sprague received 754. Both Cooke and Matos will serve a three year term on the School Committee.

Candidates for the two open spots on the Selectboard included current Chair Jeffrey Cyr, Trevor Baptiste, Carol Constant and Renee Sweeney. Both Cyr and Constant were elected to the board with Cyr earning 1,167 votes and Constant earning 1,091. Baptiste earned 663 votes and Sweeney earned 820. Cyr and Constant will serve three year terms on the board.

Other contested races included two separate races for positions on the Board of Health. Winners included Jessica Collins, who was elected to serve a three year term on the board, Christine McKiernan, who will serve a one year term on the board and Johanna Ravenhurst, who will also serve a one year term. The last contested race was for a position on the Municipal Light Board where Gregory Dubreuil and Peter McAvoy were elected to a three year term.

Uncontested races included Evelyn Masson who will serve a three year term to the Board of Assessors, M. Christine Blaney who will serve a four year term on the Housing Authority, Bradford Hutchinson who will serve a three year term on the Planning Board and Michael Davis who will also serve a three year term on the Planning Board. Other winners of uncontested races included John Duda and Matthew Brunell who were elected to five year terms on the Housing Authority, and Mitchell Resnick, Tina Tarr and Lanette Sweeney who will serve three year terms as trustees to the free library.
