2020 to bring multiple road projects for Westfield, Southwick

Date: 2/12/2020

SOUTHWICK/WESTFIELD – Over the course of 2020 and early 2021, both Southwick and Westfield residents should expect to see their roads and their commutes impacted by roadwork happening across both municipalities.

Southwick Department of Public Works Director Randy Brown said that there are currently two ongoing projects carried over from 2019 that residents should mind in the near future.

The first is a the work being done on Congamond Road, for which the contractor is expected to return in the spring for some minor touchups, although this project is largely complete. The other ongoing project is that of the College Highway and Jerry Drive area, at  which there will be continued water main and pump station work, and Jerry Drive will be paved in the spring.

The projects that are expected to begin in Southwick in 2020 are as follows:

•Nicholson Hill Road will likely be paved in the parts that are still gravel after it was first paved nearly 10 years ago.

•Fred Jackson Road will have the culvert replaced near the Granville Road intersection during the summer, bids for which began on Jan. 15. This project will require that the road be shut down at the culvert.

•There will be further paving and drainage work on Tammy Lane. and Jeffrey Circle, which will include the complete drainage replacement of pipes, manholes, and catch basins.

Depot Street will be subject to sidewalk replacements sometime in the spring, as 1,000 feet of the sidewalk is deteriorating.

•Bonneview Road and Cedar Street will have its deteriorated drain line replaced.

•Director Brown said that the town appropriated $2 million for the projects in the queue, but that they hope to be able to do additional work as well.

•For Westfield, some work will be conducted by Westfield Gas and Electric as part of their 10-year plan to replace aging gas infrastructure and prevent gas leaks from sprouting.

•In 2020, WG&E expects to do this work in the areas of Notre Dame Street and Holyoke Road.

•Upper Notre Dame Street itself will have gas line replacement work done during the year as well as the following roads in the area: Furrow Street, Queen Street, Bristol Street, Pinehurst Street, Cranston Street, Foch Avenue, Atwater Street, Parker Avenue, and Sackville Avenue.

•Near Holyoke Road, the streets that will have work done are as follows: Holyoke Road itself, Lynnwood Drive, Denise Drive, and Sandy Hill Road.

Additional road work is expected by the Westfield DPW and Engineering Department, but was not finalized by the Westfield City Council by press time.
