SOUTHWICK — Lisa Anderson, sexton of the town cemeteries on College Highway, is accepting donations to bring Wreaths Across America to Southwick.
Wreaths Across America is a Maine-based nonprofit that coordinates with cemeteries around the nation to provide evergreen wreaths with red bows that are placed on the gravestones of veterans in what’s now known as National Wreaths Across America Day, the third Saturday each December — this year, Dec. 16.
Over the past several months Anderson, whose father Paul Winch served in Korea and Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Air Force, has been quietly raising money to cover the cost of laying wreaths on all 450 veterans’ grave in Southwick’s New Cemetery.
She thanked those who have already helped raise the sponsorship money needed, including the Southwick Lions Club, members of the Congregational Church, and American Legion Post 338 for hosting the spaghetti supper, Crestview Construction, Saunders Package Store, and attorney Linda Mol.
According to Wreaths Across America, 2.7 million wreaths were placed on veterans’ gravestones across the country at 3,702 participating locations. The state veterans cemetery in Agawam has been a participant for several years.
