SOUTHWICK – Southwick Regional School has hired Meirion George as its newest athletic director July 1.
George said in his first public remarks since taking the position that he thinks the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School District has a lot of “ambition” and that he sees a lot of potential for athletics in the near future.
“There seems to be quite an ambition within the schools,” said George. “There is huge potential with the land they have and young student athletes coming through in the next few years.”
George was born and raised in Wales and lived in Canterbury, England, before moving to the U.S. Once here, he was a director with a soccer program in eastern Massachusetts before moving out west to be the athletic director for the MacDuffie School, where he worked for 20 years.
George said he pursued the position in Southwick in part because his wife works in the district and spoke very highly of Southwick Regional School along with its students and faculty. He said he also sees the regional School Committee as being generally supportive of athletics in the district.
When high school sports return this fall, George said he thinks it will be with decent participation among students.
Though he has no plans to enter the role and make sweeping decisions for Southwick athletics, George said that one idea he would like to explore is providing a greater variety of sports to Southwick Regional School students.
One example he gave was tennis, which he describes as a reasonably simple sport to pick up for any skill level.
