SOUTHWICK – With its events cancelled until further notice as a result of the pandemic, Southwick’s 250th Anniversary Committee is hosting a photo contest to show off the town’s highlights.
Jim Putnam, the 250th Anniversary Committee’s chair, said a photo contest was part of the original plan for the celebration but had to be pushed to the side to plan other events.
“We had discussed this several times when we were planning our events for this year, but we had so many things to do that this when went on the maybe someday list. We’re on hold for an indefinite period of time, so it made sense with activity beginning again to give the idea a try,” he said.
Photos can be submitted based on four categories, which include farmscapes, landscapes, places and people.
While these photos are set to commemorate the 250th anniversary, Putnam said he hopes residents use the pictures to celebrate future milestones.
“We are hoping for lots and lots of photos that we can not only use now, but are there in 2045 and 2070 when those folks are looking for photos of what things looked like 50 years ago. From our standpoint, this is a pay it forward type of thing, like a digital time capsule,” he said.
Although residents are only required to submit one photo, Putnam said he wants residents to send as many as possible.
“I hope that instead of sending one or two, residents will send us 10 or 20. We have a photogenic town, with lots of different things we enjoy looking at. We take a lot of them for granted,” he said.
Putnam added that the committee had already received its first two submissions just one day after the contest began.
All of the photos will be blind judged by a five person panel and the first place winner will receive an anniversary sweatshirt, hat, glass, and decal while second place will receive a T-shirt, glass and decal, and third place will received the glass and decal.
Residents have until Sept. 28 to submit their photos to JimP@southwick250.org and the winners will be announced on Nov. 7.
“We hope we have lots of participation and lots of great images so we can have some fun with this,” Putnam said.
