SOUTHWICK – After struggling to garner interest in the position, the Board of Health recently heard from four applicants interested in two regional health nurse positions.
The positions would be one full-time and one part-time public health nurse that would serve the towns of Southwick, Tolland, Granville, Blandford, Montgomery and Russell, with Southwick as the lead municipality.
The regional health nurse positions were made possible when Southwick applied last year for a Public Health Excellence Shared Services grant and got the other five communities on board. Southwick Health Director Alex White said that the interviews of the four candidates should begin by mid-August.
“We will need to determine what each of the nurses’ and towns’ needs are,” said White.
The idea behind the program, which has 40 other regional agreements between 268 cities and towns across the state, is to supplement the public health functions of each municipality without every single town having to hire its own individual nurse.
The grant for the Southwick group is for $189,000, most of which will be used to pay for the two nurses.
