SOUTHWICK – The Fire Department will be the recipient of a Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) Grant for more than $4,000 to fund education and safety programs.
Fire Chief Russ Anderson said that the Southwick Fire Department would receive $4,692 in grant funds. He said they will use the funds for student awareness programs in Southwick schools.
Southwick firefighters will go into elementary schools to teach kids about fire safety and to teach them what it is like to be a firefighter. The funds would likely be used on educational materials and extra time for the firefighters.
Due to COVID-19, it is unclear when firefighters will be allowed into Southwick schools for SAFE events. Anderson said he has not yet heard when they will be allowed to do so.
A portion of the grant – $2,480 – will be used for senior programs such as Sand for Seniors and the House Numbering Program. The Sand for Seniors program provides local seniors with buckets of sand that they can use to de-ice their driveways if they are physically or financially unable to do so on their own.
The House Numbering Program provides Southwick residents with house numbers that can be more easily seen from the street. If one needs to call first responders to their home, they can easily see the correct house number, even in dark conditions due to the reflective paint.
