Southwick Select Board decides on new building inspector

Date: 5/7/2020

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Select Board met for a regularly scheduled meeting on April 28 to select the town’s new building inspector, to discuss Emergency Rental Assistance and to vote on several action items.

The first order of business at the meeting was to approve $14,725 for election related expenses in regard to the upcoming special senate election, the annual town election, and the annual Town Meeting, which the board unanimously approved.

The board then discussed an Emergency Rental Assistance Program after Select Board Vice Chair Doug Moglin listened in on a statewide call about providing rental assistance to those who had lost jobs due to COVID-19. Moglin explained that the assistance would be available under CPC funding, but there would be some hurdles to cross before putting it into effect. “It would be subject to a Town Meeting vote and a CPC vote under the housing category. And I don’t know where we would go for feedback from town residents to see if there is a need,” he said.

However, the board could not take any action on the Emergency Rental Assistance because the matter has to be approved by the CPC first.

The board then approved a motion to extend the deadline to register docks, vessels and floats in the Congamond Lakes to July 1as a result of the coronavirus.

The first order of old business at the meeting was to decide on the town’s new building inspector. Board Clerk Joe Deedy started the conversation by recommending they go with either Kyle Scott or Bob Sullivan. He said, “I think the two gentlemen are both decent and they both probably have the same amount of experience, one’s just a little younger and one’s a little older. I think they’re just two different versions of the same thing it’s just a matter of which way we want to go.”

After Deedy’s opening comments, Board Chair Russ Fox suggested that they pick Kyle Scott and Moglin quickly agreed. With little discussion, the Board agreed to offer the open building position to Kyle Scott.

The next order of business was to accept the recommendation from Russo Barr for the general contractor for the project to fix the fire department’s roof, however, the board decided to kick the decision over to its next meeting.

The board closed its meeting by discussing the announcement that the town’s Building and Grounds Lead Custodian, Sandy Salmon, would be retiring. Fox said, “Sandy is a wonderful person and she’s done a great job for the town of Southwick and I’m sure that we will be able to convince her to help out in the future. And I’m sure Sandy is not the type of person to quit it all.”

The Southwick Select Board next meets on May 5.
