SOUTHWICK – As part of Southwick’s 250th anniversary festivities the town will be celebrating the New Year with its first ever First Night event at the town’s Woodland School and Recreation Center from 4 to 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
Jim Putnam, a member of Southwick’s 250th Committee, said they will be offering events for all ages. He said that children under 13 will have all of their festivities in Woodland School, while kids over 13 will have their fun at the town’s Rec Center.
While the kids are having most of their fun indoors, Putnam added that they will be opening up the Rec Center’s parking lot for some outdoor activities for everyone, including a bonfire, s’mores and fireworks starting at 6:30 p.m.
Putnam said that part of the reasoning behind the party was that the committee wanted to host a child-friendly event ahead of a typical parents’ night out on New Year’s Eve and hosting this event would be a great way to kick off the anniversary year.
“We thought it was a really special way to kick off the New Year and Southwick’s 250th anniversary and to give the kids a chance to have some fun before the parents go out for their New Year’s Eve festivities,” he said.
The committee is encouraging residents planning to attend to park in the Powder Mill School’s parking lot. Putnam said, “We’ve been working closely with the police to plan out the logistics and decided that we will be closing down the access road to Woodland School for the night so we are encouraging everyone to park at Powder Mill School.”
Putnam said the 25–member anniversary committee has been hard at work planning festivities for the entire year and so far things have been going well.
“We’ve been meeting every month since we came together in 2018, planning different celebrations for this year and so far things have gone great,” he said.
While the year-long celebrations for the anniversary are just beginning, Putnam said that they will keep going until October when the festivities wrap up with the town’s 250th Anniversary Parade and Gala.
Putnam added that he was excited for the town’s New Year Celebration. He said, “I’m really looking forward to seeing the families come out and have fun. It should be a nice, friendly community event.”
