Southwick, Westfield set to honor veterans with parades

SOUTHWICK/WESTFIELD – With Veterans Day fast approaching, both Westfield and Southwick are preparing for the day with parades and events to honor local veterans.

In Southwick, the town will honor veterans with its annual parade on Nov. 11. Cindy Pendleton, an administrative assistant with the Southwick Select Board and chief administrative officer, said the veterans will line up at 10:15 a.m. on Monday at the Summer House on College Highway. She added that from there the veterans will march a half-mile to the center of town where they will be honored in a brief ceremony.

Julie Barnes, the director of the Westfield Veterans’ Services, said the day will kick-off with a breakfast sponsored by the Westfield Boys and Girls Club, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Barnes said the breakfast is open to both veterans and current military and will be held at the Boys and Girls Club.  

Then at 10:30 a.m. Westfield Veterans’ Services will hots its annual Veterans Day parade. The parade, which starts at the senior center, will take the veterans on a nearly mile-long march that ends at Parker Park across from Westfield Middle Schoool. Barnes said that once the veterans arrive at the park, they will be honored in a ceremony at 11 a.m.

Blessed Sacrament Church in Westfield will host a Veterans Day Service Nov. 10 at 11 a.m.

Barnes said the City of Westfield Veterans’ Services Facebook page has a link to all of the different deals and discounts for veterans on Veterans Day. However, this list of deals is for all veterans, not just Westfield residents. The post on Facebook also stae, “If you need a copy of your discharge papers, please come to our office and we can help you!”
