Thousands mud it out through obstacle race at The Wick

Date: 9/28/2022

SOUTHWICK — Thousands of people turned out to The Wick 338 over the weekend to push themselves through the grueling 3-mile Rugged Maniac obstacle course.

Runners in the race crawled through mud under barbed wire, climbed over wooden walls, and jumped over fire along the famous Wick 338 motocross track. Before the weekend event, organizers said they were expecting 5,500 participants in the course across Saturday and Sunday.

The Wick 338 owner Rick Johnson praised the Rugged Maniac crews and volunteers Monday morning, and described a successful event. Rugged Maniac first came to the Southwick motocross track in 2010.

“They have such a good crew. It can be touch and go because we have such an old facility,” said Johnson.

The Wick 338 will continue to play host to racing events through the rest of the year. Oct. 1 will see the Northeast Veterans Championship, in which experienced motocross riders ages 25-60 will ride in what many consider the most famous motocross track in the country. Before the championship this weekend, former national motocross champion Tim Ferry will be helping with a school and open practice to prepare riders for the weekend.

“This one brings in riders from all over the U.S. and Canada,” said Johnson.

The next big event at The Wick in 2022 is Round 6 of the Fox Racing JDay Off Road E-MTB Series on Nov. 5. Round 1 already took place at The Wick on April 23.

Johnson also confirmed the return of Cyclocross on Dec. 4, in which riders on pedaled bikes will race The Wick 338’s track, as opposed to the traditional motorized bikes often seen and heard there. The event was first introduced to The Wick in December 2021.

“It is a lot quieter,” said Johnson.
