Civic Space Collaborative completes mural commemorating Monson

Date: 9/14/2023

MONSON — The town of Monson will now feature new artwork, as a mural has recently been completed on the Adams Hometown Market. This comes in addition to a new “makeover” to the store’s branding and look.

The company itself has been around for over 40 years, and is now paying tribute with a mural outside of its Monson location with the theme, “A celebration of Monson: past, present and future.” The mural was approved back in April, but installation did not begin until Aug. 22.

Melissa Stratton-Pandina of Easthampton and Shara Osgood of Fitchburg are the two artists who were given the job of painting the mural in collaboration with company Civic Space Collaborative. They hosted events to involve the community in this project, including a “paint party,” at which residents could come and help the artists with painting the new mural.

The town of Monson’s Facebook page made a post last month with more information on the idea behind the mural, and what it means for the town.

“This artwork takes us on a journey through time, giving locals a chance to rediscover their roots and celebrate the town’s shared history,” the post says. “The colorful mural features significant local monuments, community leaders, Monson’s connection with nature, and is all tied together by a graphic depiction of the iconic flood of 1955.”

A ribbon cutting was scheduled to take place on Sept. 13, after Reminder Publishing’s deadline. Due to weather, the ceremony was rescheduled for Sept. 15
